After receiving a bachelor's degree in religion from Yale, I taught high school in Florida and was a community organizer and social worker in New Orleans. From there I went on to earn my law degree from Harvard Law School, later applying that knowledge to public service with a special interest in children’s programs and services to the poor.
A lifelong student of leadership, I created a leadership consulting practice in Detroit and garnered a client list of Fortune 500 companies, small businesses, non-profit organizations and everyday people who simply wanted to find the leader within. In 2000, I began writing and distributing “Reading for Leading,” a weekly motivational message on leadership, which now has 12,000 subscribers.
When my wife, Jennifer Granholm became the Governor of Michigan, I formally returned to the world of public service. As Michigan’s first, “First Gentleman,” I lead an army of volunteers in services ranging from mentoring to marathon running. I have dedicated myself to making the state government a “great place to do great work.”
In 2006 I was chosen by my peers to chair the spouses' Leadership Council of the National Governors Association.
You can hear me on Michigan Talk Network, WJIM-AM in Lansing, from 6-7 p.m., M-F. In addition, I blog regularly. Both of my blogs (www.danulhern.com and Reading for Leading) are available at my Personal blog.
I've also recently published a book on leadership insights, Everyday Leadership: Getting Results in Business, Politics, and Life .
